Chapter II
Problems and Solutions
Notes:
- This is merely a guide. These techniques work for me on a bare Windows
box. I am not responsible if you attempt to enact any of these suggestions
and anything untoward happens.
Steps:
- Install the basic OS.
- Install the necessary drivers.
- Enable CTRL-ALT-DEL before logins.
- Disable welcome screen.
- Enable Options button on login screen.
- Run gpedit.msc to disable the shutdown tracker.
- Copy the I386 directory from the source media to
c:\windows\i386.
- Run regedit.exe to edit the i386 directory location.
- Rename all NICs appropriately.
- Remove File and Print Sharing from all NIC configurations.
- Place checks in all checkboxes in all HDD advanced property settings.
- Run Windows Update about 8 times to install all the primary and
secondary updates.
- Run Calculator and choose Scientific view.
- Install secure shell client.
- Place the following on the desktop:

Shortcut to c:\windows\temp
-
Shortcut to c:\windows\system32\cmd.exe
-
Shortcut to c:\windows\system32\mstsc.exe
-
Shortcut to secure shell client
- Edit the properties of the cmd.exe shortcut so that its startup
directory is c:\windows\temp.
- Enable immediate delete for the recycle bin.
- Place notepad.exe and wordpad.exe in the Administrator's sendto
directory.
- Adjust the mouse sensitivity if necessary.
- Adjust the folder views to the following:

Do not cache thumbnails

Do not hide extensions
-
Display common tasks
-
Enable these settings for all folders
- Arrange drive letter assignments as necessary.
- Enable numlock.
- Enable incoming RDC / Terminal Services.
- Remove enhanced IE security.
- In IE, set the following:

Add Google to favorites
-
Set home page to be blank
-
Remove all other favorites and hide the Links
directory
-
Do not allow autocomplete
-
Do not allow passwords
-
Check close download box when complete
- Install Adobe Flash viewer.
- Install Adobe PDF viewer.
- Install WinZIP if necessary.
- Install WinRAR.
- Adjust display properties appropriately.
- Adjust power settings appropriately.
- Set default sound option and enable taskbar icon.
- In task manager, enable viewing all processes for all owners.
- In start menu properties:

Enable the clock in the system tray

Show quick launch
- Run media player to set the default options.
- Install any necessary printers.
- Clean everything in the following areas:

Users' local settings\temp directory
-
c:\windows\temp directory
-
IE's cache, history, pw, and forms data
-
All event logs
-
Spurious items in the Start menu
- Shut down system normally.
- Create GHOST image!
